Las palabras pesan

Las palabras pesan begins with chains of comments found on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter about Cuba’s political and social reality. A post provokes a response, that response leads to another, and very soon it is no longer clear whether what is being debated is a piece of news, an ideology, or the country each person believes they have lived in.

The work reconstructs these conversations using steel chains and small golden letters. The words leave the screen but retain the relationship that connected them: one phrase responds to another, contradicts it, or extends a discussion that seems never-ending.

I am interested in that point where an everyday conversation ends up carrying something much larger than what first set it in motion. Within these chains, the promises of the socialist project reappear, along with their erosion and the different ways of understanding the same country. The gold still retains something of those promises. The words say the rest.
